YOUNG PEOPLE'S VIEW
The Education Department feel that it is important for the young people to be involved in the future development of the work that we do, so all young people are given the opportunity to evaluate our input. Hopefully the following statements from young people show our success.
Ardrossan Sep 2007 pupils said they learnt….
- ‘Stay at home until you are ready’
- ‘I learnt not to judge people because they are homeless, because they are not all druggies etc’
- ‘I learned that you don’t get a house any quicker if you are pregnant’
Ardrossan Oct 2006 pupils said they learnt….
- ‘You can’t expect to leave home and expect the council just to give you a house’
- ‘Where to go and what to do if you become homeless’
- ‘I learnt that I really need to make sure that I know what I’m doing when I leave home’
- ‘It’s not as fun as I thought it would be having your own house because of the small budgets you have to live on’
Ardrossan Oct 2005 pupils said….
- ‘it made me think about the advantages and disadvantages of getting a home’
- ‘You don’t need to be on the streets to be homeless’
- ‘to never leave home when you are not prepared’
A Pupil at Auchenharvie Academy (Oct 2007) said…‘ I learned that you shouldn’t move out of your house without thinking, you need to know the right time’
A Pupil from Auchenharvie Academy (Feb 2007) said…..‘I learned what it was like living on your own and how you need to budget’

- ‘I learned about all the responsibilities there are when you have your own house.’
- ‘I learned that it was actually quite hard to live in a house yourself and pay all the bills.’

- ‘That not all homeless people are drug/alcohol abusers. They can be professional people too’
- ‘Don’t leave home at a young age without thinking it through’

- ‘I learned that it is hard money wise when you leave home’

- ‘There are more homeless people than I thought.’
- ‘I learned that homeless people are not all down and outs.’
- ‘That people are ignorant of homelessness.’

- ‘I liked it when they asked us our views (group discussion).’
- ‘It changed my mind about moving out at a young age.’
Pupils at Greenwood Academy (Oct 2006) said….
- ‘I thought it was useful as I didn’t realise all the people that come under the term homeless and also what it takes to have a home.’
- ‘I thought the session was useful as it highlighted all the difficulties of moving out and what problems there could be.’
- ‘I liked the fact that the talk came from CHAP instead of our teacher, as CHAP are the experts in homelessness and can tell you everything you need to know, the teacher might make things up’
- ‘I preferred the visit from CHAP to our normal PSE lesson’

- ‘Yes, to stay with your parents as long as possible until you find a suitable place.’
- ‘That there are lots of reasons why someone can become homeless.’

- ‘I learned that moving into your own house is expensive. It costs a lot of money if you don’t have a good job.’
- ‘Yes, not to get too carried away about leaving home at the age of 16.’
- ‘You gave a lot of information.’
- ‘The people gave us time to voice our opinions.’
- ‘The lesson was quite depressing and made me feel guilty as I realised how hard it is for homeless people.’
- ‘The speakers were good; they were more hip hop than the teachers!’

- ‘Think about moving out seriously’
- ‘I learned that I need to take everything into consideration before leaving home’
- ‘Yes, I learnt that homelessness is a serious and big problem where I live.’
