Access to Work scheme extended to provide extra support to disabled workers during the COVID-19 pandemic
The Access to Work scheme has been extended to provide extra support to disabled workers during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Designed to protect thousands of jobs ‘in these unprecedented times’, the new extensions to the scheme will provide -
- grant funding for those who need support to work from home because of COVID-19 to help pay for special equipment such as a screen reader or video remote interpreting or support worker services;
- financial support with things like taxi fares for people travelling into the office where, due to their health condition, public transport isn’t a safe option at the moment; and
- tailored mental health support for up to nine months for those who are anxious about returning to work and who need support.
The grant can also help pay for items or services you need, including:
- adaptations to the equipment you use
- special equipment or software
- British Sign Language interpreters and video relay service support, lip speakers or note takers
- adaptations to your vehicle so you can get to work
- taxi fares to work or a support worker if you cannot use public transport - for example, if you use a wheelchair and your journey includes a train station that does not have ramps
- taxi fares to work or a support worker if you cannot use public transport safely because of coronavirus (COVID-19) - for example, if you’re blind and because of this you’re unable to stay apart from other people
- a support worker or job coach to help you in your workplace
- personal protective equipment for your support worker, if you employ them yourself
- disability awareness training for your colleagues
- the cost of moving your equipment if you change location or job
You may not receive a grant if you already receive certain benefits.
The money does not have to be paid back and will not affect your other benefits.
The government says that applications for funding can be ‘fast-tracked’ for people in the clinically extremely vulnerable group.
Application information can be found on the government website here.
