Becoming a charity Trustee with CHAP
Within the confines of our Constitution, we are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have something to offer by joining the CHAP Board.
Trustees come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring varied skills and lived or professional experience to assist CHAP in many different ways.
The current Board profile includes skills in:
- Legal Affairs
- Human Resources
- Housing
- Finance
- Marketing
- Business Development
- Communications / Social Values
- Information Technology
This skills profile and our requirements vary over time and we may seek individuals with additional skillsets. We are also keen to hear from people willing and able to add additional perspectives.
Board-level experience is not essential but a commitment to advancing the aims of the charity is paramount. Further details of our structure and the type of services offered can be found here.
Trustees have a collective responsibility to ensure CHAP complies with:
- All legal responsibilities as defined by OSCR (the Scottish Charities Regulator)
- The maintenance of our charity standards in every respect
- Organisational function and development, according to our constitution
- The need to remain financially viable and able to deliver against our objectives on an ongoing basis
You would be expected to become acquainted with the above responsibilities but would be supported by CHAP and other Board members while getting up to speed.
Board Recruitment Process
When someone volunteers, or is suggested by (or to) a CHAP Board member, the first step is an informal discussion to explain the role and responsibilities.
If the candidate wishes to proceed, their profile will be supplied to the full Board. Existing Trustees will discuss any candidate’s initial suitability against current Board vacancy.
If appropriate, the CEO and at least one board member will advance the application and meet with you to explore skills, experience and ‘fit’ for the organisation, before feeding back to the Board.
Candidates who proceed to the next stage, will be invited to join a full Board meeting as an observer.
If you wish to have an informal chat about starting this process, you are warmly invited to get in touch with our Chairperson, Ray Chaney, by email: rchaney@chap.org.uk
