Chancellor Announces Increase to Energy Bills Support Payment
On 26th May 2022, Rishi Sunak announced that the original offer of a £200 ‘loan’ to support with energy costs, will now be doubled to £400. This will now be a one-off grant and will not be paid back.
Direct debit and credit customers will have the money credited to their account by their energy provider, whilst households with a pre-payment meter will have the money applied to their meter or via a paid voucher.
The Chancellor also announced a £15 billion package which will involve a cost-of-living payment to those on DWP and HMRC means-tested benefits, a pensioner cost of living payment, and a disability cost of living payment. Whilst the specific details announced only relate to England, it has been confirmed that the Barnett formula provides a share of this funding to the devolved administrations throughout the UK in order that they can decide how to provide support. We will provide an update on this as more information becomes available.
