More than 150,000 vulnerable households are in ‘dangerously under-regulated’ exempt accommodation
Obtained by Crisis, the data shows that 153,701 households in Great Britain were housed in exempt accommodation as of May 2021. This represents a 62 per cent increase from the total of 892,519 five years earlier in May 2016.
More than 150,000 vulnerable households are in ‘dangerously under-regulated’ exempt accommodation, according to new Freedom of Information (FOI) data.
‘Exempt accommodation’ can cover Temporary Accommodation for those currently homeless. The rent for these types of tenancy can be several hundred pounds per week. This can be mitigated by Discretionary Housing Payments for those in receipt of Universal Credit housing costs or those still in receipt of Housing Benefit, but for those not in receipt this can lead to a very large amount of rent arrears in a short space of time, typically when someone is at their most vulnerable.
