Don’t get caught out by free trials and subscriptions!
Have you ever signed up for a free trial of something and then forgot to cancel it before it ended? Or subscribed to something you still paid for long after your need for it expired? If you have, you’re not alone. According to a recent survey, more than half of UK consumers have wasted money on unwanted subscriptions that they forgot to cancel after a free trial or when they no longer needed the product or service.
Free trials are a great way to try out new products and services without paying anything upfront. They can help you save money, discover new things, and enjoy some perks. But they can also be a trap if you don’t pay attention to the fine print. Some of them may require you to enter your credit card details when you sign up, and then automatically charge you when the trial period ends. Some of them may have hidden fees or terms and conditions that make it hard to cancel. And some of them may not even remind you when your trial is about to expire.
So how can you avoid falling into the free trial trap? Here are some tips that can help you:
- Before you sign up for a free trial, read the terms and conditions carefully. Make sure you understand what you are agreeing to, how long the trial lasts, how much it will cost after the trial ends, and how to cancel it.
- Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to cancel the free trial before it ends. You can also use apps or websites that can help you track your subscriptions and send you alerts when they are due.
- Check your bank statements regularly and look for any charges that you don’t recognize. If you see any, contact the company and ask for a refund. You can also dispute the charge with your bank or credit card provider if necessary.
- If you like the product or service and want to continue using it after the trial, look for the best deal possible. You may be able to get a discount or a better offer if you shop around or negotiate with the company.
- If you subscribed to something, review your need for the product/service, and cancel your subscription for things you no longer need or use.
Just recently, whilst looking over a client’s Income and Expenditure, we realised that they had been paying £20 per month for several years and had no idea what this was for. After further investigation, we found that they had subscribed to a service and had forgotten about it. This meant that over almost 20 years, they had paid around £5,000 for something they did not even remember doing.
Free trials can be a great way to try new things, but they can also be a costly mistake if you’re not careful. So be smart and don’t let them catch you off guard. Remember, nothing is truly free in this world!
