Legislation Update
The Scottish Government has approved its extension to the emergency protective legislation to safeguard people from some of the worst financial aspects of the pandemic. These include:
- an increased notice period of six months to protect private and social sector tenants from eviction, up from the pre-pandemic 28-day notice period; and
- an increase in the minimum debt level that an individual must owe before a creditor can make them bankrupt to £10,000, up from £3,000 pre-pandemic.
- the ability for some court and tribunal hearings to be held remotely;
The extension means that these safeguards are now in place up to 31st March 2022.
While this was being discussed, the Scottish Government announced a new £10 million grant to support tenants who have fallen into rent arrears as a direct result of the pandemic.
